Why we need you:

Do you want to get involved in an experience that raises thousands of pounds to fund life saving research into the causes and treatment of cancer? Then volunteering as a Relay For Life Team Volunteer is just the thing for you.

Cancer Research UK Relay For Life is a celebration of the communities fight against cancer as teams across the country fundraise in the months leading up to the event.

Relay For Life - Witney is a year round fundraising experience which culminates in an overnight, community led, 24 hour walking event held at Witney Rugby Football Club.

Everyone is invited to come along and celebrate the lives of Cancer Survivors, remember those lost to the disease and show their support of Cancer Research UK's vital work. The day itself has a fun, carnival atmosphere where everyone, regardless of age or athletic ability, can take part.

As a logistics volunteer you’ll have a really important role to play in the run up to the Relay and on the day itself. You’ll support the Witney committee with the ‘nuts and bolts’ of locating a venue and equipping it with all necessary facilities and ensuring each of your fellow committee members have what they require to deliver a safe event; in short, you’ll support everything on the practical side together.

This  will give everyone the platform on which to build a wonderful celebration.

What will I be doing?

Working with the Relay for Life Logistics Chair on the Witney committee, you will support the organisation of the main event in July.

  • Completing risk assessments of the event site
  • Confirming arrangements for access to the venue, provision of toilet facilities etc.
  • Arranging First Aiders for the Relay.
  • Supporting the Logistics Chair with any other ad hoc event logistics tasks necessary

On the day itself you may be involved in:

Liaising with other Committee Members to support their requirements during the Relay and briefing them on logistical matters for the day to ensure a safe and compliant event

What skills and attributes do I need to have?

  • You’ll need to be thorough and have an eye for detail to make sure we’ve got all the facilities in place for a safe and compliant Relay.
  • An ability to liaise and work with others Committee Members, the Staff Partner and people external to the Relay is important.
  • Quick thinking, calm and adaptable, just in case some things don’t go to plan.
  • This role really suits individuals from the armed forces, fire service or police or with a H&S background

How much time do I need to commit?

How much time you commit is flexible and negotiable with the Witney Logistics Chair. You may need to attend some Relay For Life committee meetings, particularly as the event draws closer and we’d like you to attend the event itself for the full 24 hours to provide support on the day.

What support will I be given?

  • You will work alongside the Witney Relay Committee and in particular the Logistics Chair who will support you and provide you with a brief on the activity to perform.
  • Your Staff Contact via your Committee Chair can help you with Risk Assessments and any relevant Health and Safety requirements, as well as providing ongoing support as and when it is needed.
  • You will receive a full introduction to the Relay For Life event and training on the relevant paperwork.

What benefits can I expect?

  • Being part of the biggest fundraising activity in the world
  • Supporting the Logistics Chair, will harness and develop your logistics/health and safety experience,
  • The satisfaction you are making a valuable contribution to Cancer Research UK and the fight against cancer
  • Valuable experience for anyone looking to work in event management and planning
  • An insight into working within the community fundraising area of the charity sector
  • The Relay itself is fun and a great way to meet people and make friends with people in your community
  • We will reimburse agreed expenses you incur as a result of your volunteer role if required

Where will I be based?

You will be based in Witney and the surrounding areas. This is a role that can be based from home, but attending committee meetings and supporting the committee with site visits, will require being ‘out and about’ in the community. Meetings will be held in venues local to Witney.
