Meet our volunteers: Dan Wakelin

Dan WakelinDan has been volunteering as a Relay for Life Chairperson in Plymouth since 2007. He started volunteering for Cancer Research UK after his gran had cancer. He wanted to do something for other people who have been affected by the disease.

“My role involves supporting the committee to deliver a 24 hour event aimed at raising awareness of cancer as well as funds for research.

"I get involved with all aspects of Relay for Life, from team recruitment, to promotional events, to logistics and planning the ceremonies.

“There is such a variety of things to do and I work with a fantastic team, many of whom are cancer survivors, to deliver the event.”

Volunteering highlights

“One of my best bits has been at the Relay event, watching our VIP guests - cancer survivors - walk around the track to open and close the event. This year we played Proud by Heather Small, and I can truly say I was proud at that point.

“It’s such a good opportunity to do something worthwhile. I have enjoyed every minute of it.

“The events are great and raising the money is great, but even better are the people you meet when you do it. I've made some 'friends for life' too!”

Volunteer with Relay for Life

Organising a Relay for Life is a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience. Relay Committee Chairs bring members of their community together to raise money for Cancer Research UK throughout the year.
