Alan has been volunteering as an Action Team Co-ordinator in his local community of Dorset for over a year.
As an IT teacher at a large secondary school, Alan was inspired to share his skills and knowledge to help promote Cancer Research UK’s work.
“Having lost members of the family to cancer, I wanted to give something back for all the help and support I’d been given in the past.
“I created a website that highlights our fundraising activities and upcoming fundraising events in Dorset. I also produce a monthly newsletter which is emailed to all volunteers in the Dorset area.
“Our volunteering team collects donations in the local square and around the nearby cafes. I help oversee this and keep account details of the monies raised.
Volunteering highlights
“While every event and occasion has its own highlights, some memorable moments include standing in torrential rain on one of our “Fun Days”, standing in the sun on a Bournemouth summer collection day and meeting a fantastic team of volunteers.
“I would definitely encourage others to volunteer for Cancer Research UK. You have so much to gain, making new friends, expanding your skills set, knowing that you’re helping fund research into fighting cancer and joining in with the celebration when breakthroughs are made.”
