“Think what you want to get out of the internship and choose a role that will help achieve this.”
Why Cancer Research UK?
Michael wanted to establish a career in the charity sector, and gaining first hand experience seemed the best way to make himself more employable.
After looking into various internships, Michael found the Cancer Research UK internship scheme came across as well organised and structured, as well as being recognised through several awards.
Main responsibilities
Michael was responsible for the monitoring of social media in the Internet and New Media department. This included looking into Cancer Research UK’s online presence on social networks and blogging sites and reporting on the interest in our online activities.
Highlights of my internship
“Firstly it’s a good experience to be working within a major charity for the first time. Getting a taste of the good office atmosphere, the daily routine and the passion other interns and employees show for the job,” Michael says.
“Beyond that, through my own work and also talking to other interns you begin to get an understanding of how a major charity works and I found this genuinely interesting.
“Also, being able to volunteer at the Cancer Research UK Sound & Vision event, which was headlined by Robert Plant, at Abbey Road studios was something special.”
Tips for future interns
“Pick your internship carefully so that your role will engage you and keep you interested. Think what you want to get out of the internship and choose a role that will help achieve this."
