Meet our interns: Maya Preston

Maya Preston"Embrace every opportunity you are given, as the experience is invaluable."

Why Cancer Research UK?

After graduating, Maya wanted to pursue a career within the charity sector.  An internship at Cancer Research UK was the perfect next step, as it allowed her to gain work experience at one of the UK’s leading charities as well as gain in-depth experience in fundraising events, an area she was specifically interested in.

Main responsibilities

Maya’s internship focused on supporting Cancer Research UK’s new night-time walking event, Shine. Her role covered a range of responsibilities, including designing and producing event material, recruiting volunteers and filming on the night of the event.

Highlights of my internship

“Working at the Shine Manchester event was a definite highlight as I was able to see the projects I had been working on come into action. The atmosphere was electric and I loved every second of the event,” Maya says.

“I was given lots of responsibility with a diverse range of projects and I loved working with such a passionate and friendly team.

“I have gained so much from this internship, from learning how to work effectively within such a large organisation to experiencing what is involved in organising a large scale fundraising event. This experience has only strengthened my desire to work for a charity.”

Tips for future interns

“I would definitely recommend an internship with Cancer Research UK to anyone. It provides you with an in-depth experience of working for a charity and you get continued support from the team you work in as well as from the Volunteering department.”

"Embrace every opportunity you are given, as the experience is invaluable."
