1. What is an internship at Cancer Research UK?

An internship is a voluntary placement in one of Cancer Research UK's departments based in London or at regional offices throughout the UK.

Internships are available in departments all across the organisation in such areas as fundraising, marketing, campaigning, science information and corporate resources.

2. How long is an internship?

12 weeks.

3. When will the internship start?

Summer internships will begin on Monday 25 June 2012.

We have internship intakes starting in February, July and September.

If you would like to receive an email when applications open for future intakes, please email internships@cancer.org.uk specifying which intake you are interested in.

4. Who can apply?

Those wishing to gain work experience in the charity sector:

  • undergraduates
  • graduates
  • professionals seeking a career change

5. Is an internship full-time or part-time?

Interns volunteer 3-5 days per week during standard office hours. Please consult individual role profiles for specific details.

6. Where is the internship based?

The internship will be based either at one of our central London offices or at a regional office throughout the UK. Please read the individual role profiles for specific locations.

Unfortunately none of our internships are laboratory based. If you are seeking a lab placement you may be interested in the Summer Studentship scheme at the London Research Institute.

7. Will I get paid?

The internship is voluntary and therefore unpaid. However, we will refund agreed travel expenses (e.g. up to the value of a zone 1-6 travelcard for London-based interns) and lunch (up to £4) each day.

8. How do I apply?

Search for available roles and download an application form. Completed application forms should be emailed to internships@cancer.org.uk by 12noon on the closing date. Please note we do not accept CVs or covering letters.

9. Could an internship lead to a job offer at Cancer Research UK?

An internship will not lead to a job offer at Cancer Research UK. However, while you are completing your internship, you will have access to our internal vacancies.

10. Will you provide me with a reference when I leave?

We can provide you with an internship reference when you leave.

11. Can I apply for more than one internship?

You can apply for a maximum of two internships per intake.

12. Will the scheme be repeated?

The scheme runs three times a year with internships starting in February, July and September.
