Shine Event Management Internship

Why we need you

Cancer Research UK’s National Events Internship Scheme is a fantastic opportunity for you to play an integral role in the successful planning and delivery of our night-time walking marathon SHINE.

The National Events Team at Cancer Research UK strives to lead the way in event delivery ensuring that all recruitment opportunities are fully maximised and every participant and supporter has the best possible experience.

This is an exciting time within the Events Team and you’ll be part of it working on key aspects of the planning for Shine Manchester or London. You’ll contribute to a range of office and field based research, including the logistical planning of the venue, course, pit stops and volunteer recruitment. 

Key Responsibilities - What will I be doing?

  • Support the event logistical planning of the site, course and pit stop areas
  • Produce event documentation
  • Carry out risk assessments
  • Contribute to the volunteer strategy of Shine Manchester or London
  • Research volunteer recruitment opportunities
  • Build and establish relationships with existing and new key volunteers
  • Plan, manage and deliver volunteer recruitment and information evenings
  • Deliver a key role on the event weekend (optional) 
  • Liaising with key suppliers

  • Excellent interpersonal skills for building relationships

  • Enthusiasm and the ability to proactively seek new opportunities and respond appropriately

  • An interest in fundraising and in working with the many different volunteers who support Cancer Research UK.

Additional considerations

  • Some physical activity may be required.
  • You must be willing to work unsociable hours.  
  • You should be prepared to work under all weather conditions.
  • You may be required to travel and possibly stay away from home as required.  
  • It is preferable to hold a full and clean driving licence but not essential. 
  • Access to a laptop and internet

How much time do I need to commit?

We would like someone who can work full-time from March through June 2012 (16 week internship is offered), but we realise that this might not be possible and would try and find a flexible solution for the right candidate. In this case, we would need you to commit to a minimum of three specific days each week, however this again can be flexible.

What support will I be given?

  • We will give you an induction to Cancer Research UK.
  • You will be assigned a mentor with whom you will have regular meetings to discuss your progress and personal development needs.
  • You will have a monthly one to one review and a personal development plan. 
  • We will reimburse your travel and lunch expenses relating directly to the needs of your role.
  • You will become a full and integral part of the Events team, attending all national and regional meetings and will be able to draw on the team for advice and guidance.

Where will I be based?

You will be home based, located in either;

North West area, ideally in Manchester – one intern required
South East, ideally in the London area – one intern required
