Jules' JewelsJules' Jewels

Julie Guthrie is the Team Captain for the Jules' Jewels team that takes part at Chelmsford Relay For Life.

Julie has supported Cancer Research UK for 15 years but wanted to take part in Relay For Life because, as she says “Relay provides a unique opportunity to spend 24 hours in the company of family and friends who are all intent on raising money to help beat cancer.”

Fundraising to help save lives

Jules’ Jewels have incredibly raised over £20,000 for the Chelmsford 2011 Relay For Life. They held two fundraising events – a disco and a BBQ that raised over £1,500 alone.

One of the team made beautiful homemade greeting cards and sold them with all profit going to Cancer Research UK. Julie says “we were also lucky enough to have two members of the team who work for employers that offer matched giving and this helped swell the funds enormously.”

Motivating the team

The team meet for dinner on a regular basis to talk tactics and exchange ideas.  Julie says “It is vital to maintain contact and enthusiasm and these gatherings combine business with pleasure”.

Communication also plays a vital part as Julie tries to send a fortnightly e-mail to everyone to update them on team developments.

Looking to the future

Julie is busy planning the next Relay For Life event and has already begun to recruit a team for 2012. She has already started fundraising with £903 raised so far. “I’m determined to beat the sum we raised in 2011 and this has given us a good kick-start!” says Julie.

Get involved

To sum her Relay For Life experience up in one one sentence Julie says; “If you can’t climb Everest or swim the English Channel, participating in Relay For Life is the next best achievement!”
