Gill Hawkes

Volunteering at our Bristol office

Gill is a volunteer in our Bristol office and says:

"I was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx in 1998. This was a terrible shock and meant a lot of treatment, including a partial laryngectomy. My voice is now only a whisper. My confidence was shattered and I spent a lot of time at home.

"I heard a feature on the radio about Relay For Life – it appealed for cancer survivors to start the first lap. I thought, 'I can do that'.

"At the event I felt welcome and knew that this was an organisation that I would like to be involved in.

"I soon offered to help at the local office. I do things like write letters, process donations, send out materials to supporters and local committees.

"I feel very much part of the team. I was nominated for a Flame of Hope volunteering award and I felt very proud to be chosen, and I went to the awards ceremony in London.

"Through volunteering, I have regained my confidence, I feel useful and have learnt so much. I attend fundraising events too – so that I can say thank you to the people who raise funds for the research that saved my life."
